EHS Specialist II (EPA Focused)

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Responsible for the development and implementation of EHS programs, policies, procedures, and implementation of those process and procedures across the organization. The successful candidate ensures compliance with employee occupational health and safety and environmental laws at the local, state, and federal levels. In addition to regulatory compliance this individual will be asked to be a leader in driving our EHS culture and world class injury prevention efforts.
JOB DESCRIPTION DETAILS
Systems
- Ensures all permits, conditions, training, etc. are completed to ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI, NFPA and KSDOL standards. Oversees the OSHA log process.
- Perform annual audits to ensure that current operational parameters are consistent with design and permit requirements or conditions.
- Manage the inspection calendar to ensure all required samples and recordkeeping are completed on schedule
- Ensures EHS policies and procedures are followed by company or plant personnel in compliance with local, State, and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)/Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules and regulations.
- Prepares and reviews technical EHS regulatory reporting documents.
- Ensures inspections of critical equipment and processes are effectively completed as needed.
- Conducts internal EHS audits to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards and recommends corrective or preventative measures be in place and ensures authorized improvements are sustainably implemented.
- Keeps managers and employees alerted as to the hazards or working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals, and any other hazardous substances.
- Supports and facilitates incident investigations to ensure identification of causal factors as well as corrective and preventive actions to prevent reoccurrence.
- Supports agency response and preparedness communication meetings between Viega LLC and local government agencies.
Health Systems
- Drives and promotes zero incident culture and employee engagement throughout the business.
- Support the implementation of a forward thinking EHS structure and management system through collaboration with management and employee engagement to facilitate year on year risk and operational improvements, targeted at the reduction of harm to our employees, visitors, customers, and the communities we operate within.
- Provides technical guidance to management regarding health-related issues and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Implements and recommends control measures for exposure to hazardous materials or conditions.
- Surveys, compiles, and analyzes data relating to occupational and environmental health issues.
Safety Systems
- Develop, and maintain safety policies and procedures by reviewing behaviors and updating EHS Policies and SOPs for appropriate EHS information including PPE, safe work procedures, hazardous waste management practices etc.
- Manages notifications and groups in the emergency response communication system.
- Manages EHS communications on electronic and hard copy boards; promotes effective communication programs to enhance and encourage awareness of EHS risks and compliance.
- Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations related to safety.
- Conduct safety audits to ensure safety policies and procedures are being followed and administered correctly.
- Manages and tracks EHS data and KPIs and analyze accident data to identify problem areas and develop countermeasures to prevent reoccurrence.
- Participates in the Emergency Response Team as an Emergency Coordinator.
- Oversees the Job Safety Analyses (JSA) program and utilizes H&S expertise to train others on the JSA methodology.
- Ensure company policies and procedures are followed during OSHA or other regulatory inspections.
- Ensures the appropriate PPE is identified and there is a program to ensure PPE is available for all employees.
- Assists in developing the annual IH monitoring plan, conducts IH sampling, and facilitates third party IH monitoring.
- Ensures security and confidentiality of documents and data.
Educational & Organizational Development Systems
- Partners with Site Team on the development and updating of EHS Training for new hire orientation and periodic refresher courses.
- Develops and Manages the EHS Training Matrix ensuring all employees have an accurate training plan and the training is delivered and documented.
- Oversees EHS documentation and work instructions; collaborates with affected departments to review, update, and maintains compliance with applicable regulations and current Viega LLC practices.
Other
- Attends meetings and training as required and/or assigned.
- Performs other duties as required and/or assigned.
Special Job Dimensions
- Will be required to travel up to 20% of the time.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General foundational knowledge of EHS regulations and standards (OSHA, EPA, KDHE Air and Waste Regulations, ANSI, NFPA, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with production employees, engineers, technical specialists, and management.
- Experience working with organization confidential information.
- Knowledge of computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and SAP
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
Previous professional experience in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliance and hazardous waste management processes is strongly preferred
Education, Certification/License & Work Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Safety Sciences, or related discipline
- Health and Safety related certification (GSP, ASP, CSP, CIH, etc.) obtained or pursuing a plus.
- 3-5 years related experience preferred (manufacturing experience desired)
- General foundational knowledge of EHS regulations and standards (OSHA, EAP, KDHE Air & Waste Regulations, ANSI, NFPA, etc.)
- Minimum of two years effectively leading cross-functional teams, defining clear goals, and achieving results.
