Tooling Inspector

The Tooling Inspector is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, quality, and compliance of tooling produced by vendors or in-house manufacturing processes. This role involves the use of precision hand-measuring tools, operating and programming a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), and maintaining detailed inspection records. The ideal candidate has a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and proficiency with inspection equipment and software.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION DETAILS

Tooling Inspection:

  • Perform detailed inspections of tooling using hand-measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other precision tools.
  • Operate and program CMM equipment to verify tooling dimensions and tolerances against specifications.
  • Conduct visual and dimensional inspections to identify defects, inconsistencies, or deviations.
  • Perform Inspections of new products, manufactured and purchased; ensure proper methods and forms are followed; approve or reject products according to established guidelines

Data Collection and Documentation:

  • Record inspection results and measurements accurately in logs or databases.
  • Generate detailed inspection reports, highlighting any non-conformances or areas requiring corrective action.
  • Maintain organized records for traceability and compliance with quality standards.
  • Develop, write and review QMS Documentation for the tool shop

Quality Assurance:

  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to ensure tooling meets required specifications and tolerances.
  • Assist in root cause analysis and corrective actions for tooling defects.
  • Provide feedback to vendors or in-house teams on tooling quality and areas for improvement.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Calibrate and maintain inspection tools and equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve basic issues with CMM and other measurement tools.
  • Oversee gauge management and external calibrations in collaboration with quality team

 Process Improvement:

  • Identify and recommend improvements to inspection procedures and tooling processes.
  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in inspection technologies and techniques.

 

Other

    • Attends meetings as required or assigned.

 

    • Maintains a clean work environment.

 

    • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

 

Special  Job Dimensions

   This position may require occasional travel to vendor facilities and production sites as well as training sessions for CMM. Most work is performed in an tool shop setting with regular interactions with manufacturing and quality teams.

  • Store all sharp objects properly when not in use.
  • Open and close doors cautiously and use extra caution at blind pathway intersections.
  • Report and/or clean up all spills immediately.  If spilled material is hazardous, use proper hazardous spill procedures for that product.

Use proper stepstools, platforms or ladders for climbing. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computer software Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook, and Access
  • Ability to be detail oriented in terms of evaluating documenting and adhering to specified procedures
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization

Education, Certification/License & Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Technical certification or associate degree in manufacturing, quality control, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in tooling inspection or quality control.
  • Hands-on experience operating and programming CMM equipment (Hexagon and PC-DIMS)
  • Proficiency with hand-measuring tools and blueprint reading, including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in quality inspection (e.g., ASQ Certified Quality Inspector or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment involving precision tooling.
